After using a breathing technique, she learned to help with anxiety, Elizabeth was starting to calm down more. Her breathing was starting to go back to a normal pace and she was fixing her composure. For the second time, she turned back onto the main rode.
After the little blow up, the three girls sat still and silently in the car. Suddenly, the GPS and the phones started working again. Elizabeth, Alexa, and Diana were happy for different reasons. Elizabeth was happy because she knows where she is going, Alexa was happy because she can distract herself from Diana complaining with her phone, and Diana can finally talk to her older sister about how awful the drive was going so far. The car ride was awkward. They wouldn’t say a word to each other until they made it to California. Loud 90’s pop music filled the air as the girls sat watching their phones or the road in front of them. “Material Girl” was replaced with the small dinging noise coming from the car. “Hey Miss. Anxiety, if you’re so worried about driving, maybe you should have checked the gas. We’re almost on ‘E’.” Alexa said. “Oh shit,” Elizabeth finally breaks the silence, “we’re running out of gas.” “Didn’t I just fucking say that?” The car started to move slower and slower. Alexa or Diana still hadn’t said anything, but it had gotten their attention. As Elizabeth was freaking out, trying to figure out what to do, Alexa saw that the next exit, Highway 101, was leading towards a gas station. “Get off here Liz, this exit leads towards a gas station. We can fill up there.” Without saying a word, Liz took the exit. She was going as slow as possible to save gas, but Diana suggested to go faster so they could get there before they ran out of gas. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. I should save it, so we can get there,” Alexa snapped at Dianna, “Liz slow down, we’ll make it before we run out.” It was an order and Diana was not happy about it. Elizabeth started to slow down, but Diana groaned and complained that we needed to hurry. Before Elizabeth could change the speed of her car, it started to grow slower and slower. Before they cause a traffic jam in the middle of the road, Elizabeth, for the third time, pulled over to the side of the road. “This is great. Just fucking great.” Elizabeth says getting out of the car. Both Diana and Alexa get out of the car with her, rolling their eyes. “Three times we had to pull over and now we can’t even get back to driving.” “Calm down—” Diana started, but was interrupted by an aggravated Liz. “I will not calm down! This trip was a mess from the start. From the arguing to the damn GPS and now this! We should’ve just stayed home and went to the local water park like everyone else.” “Elizabeth will you relax” Alexa grabbed Elizabeth’s arm to calm her down, but nothing worked. Elizabeth’s heart was racing so fast and she couldn’t think straight. She had just yelled at her two best friends and now they were on the side of the road, no gas, and even she didn’t know where they were. “Listen, there is a container in the back of the car that people use to transport gas. I’m pretty sure there is some in gasoline in there. We can use that to fuel the car until we reach the gas station.” The three girls agree, and they walk to the back to find a red container. “I knew I had one back here.” Diana sounded relaxed once we spotted it. When Alexa went to grab the handle and lift it, she stopped half way and groaned. Both girls were confused about why she was upset, until she threw the container easily on the dirt road. It bounced a few feet away from them. “Awesome” Elizabeth said sarcastically. “That’s just great. Now we definitely have no way to drive now.” She slammed the trunk of the car and proceed to complain more than Diana did while they were driving. She brought up how the phone was in her face constantly and how Diana was horrible at planning and making sure everything was ready. She even blamed the parents about how they should have made the three girls stay home. “Will you shut up Elizabeth! We get it you’re pissed off about this. So are we, but that doesn’t mean you have to spew all your frustration on us.” Alexa, who was trying to be the level headed one in this situation, says pulling out her phone. “Look, I still have service and a full battery. Let me just look up the closest gas station, and we could probably just walk there.” She began to search the nearest gas station within walking distance and found one result. Gas Central. It was only a two-mile walk. Diana was looking over her shoulder when she said volunteered to go, but Liz protested. “You’ll just complain that the container is to heavy for you. I’ll go. I need to clear my mind about this trip anyways. She grabbed the container off the ground and started walking but then stopped. She looked back at her to bickering friends. There was an unsettling feeling in her stomach that she shouldn’t be going alone. It could just be paranoia, but she couldn’t shake that feeling. “Maybe we should all go together,” she offered. “Hell no, you think you can do it by yourself you can go.” Alexa said “And besides, we need to watch the truck, so no one steals anything” Diana puts her two cents in. “Fine, I’ll be back soon.” Liz turns back and continues walking. “You know, Diana is just trying to help. You don’t have to be such a bitch towards her.” Alexa was defending Diana. Less than an hour ago, she was yelling at her because she was complaining to much and now they are going to pretend that nothing happened. Elizabeth just kept walking and listening to music. I can’t handle them right now. They are too much. Before crossing the street, Liz reached into her cross-bag and pulled out her head phones. Without looking at her music selection, which consisted of mostly Broadway musicals, hit shuffle and “Ten Dual Commandments” from Hamilton came on. She began walking to the steady of the song. As the beat became fast, so did her paces. She heard both Alexa and Diana call out for her. Why can’t they leave me alone? The song got to the sixth commandment, the last words she heard was “Pray that hell or heaven lets you in,” then a loud horn and everything went black.
