Dear Teenage Me,
Hey Bella, what’s up? How’s life treating you? What’s it like being 13? I can’t remember. Nothing happened, I just don’t care to remember what being 13 was like. You’re finally a teenager, but that’s about it. Nothing really special like they show in all those rated-g television shows. You’re probably in 8th grade or you’re about to start high school. So let me give you a heads up of all the people you meet so you don’t get too anxious for the next four years. You’ve met Jessica, Alexa, Sam, and Sarah but not Maggie, Alex, Paige, or Anna. You drop Sam, but reconnect with Elaine. You, Alexa, Julie, and Hannah get closer during guitar studio even after Hannah leaves. Alexa graduates early and you stop talking to Sam O. For your first semester in college you don’t eat with anyone until you move to cafeterias and that’s where you and Maggie get close. She’s also in your reading class. Don’t turn around and ask if you know her from another class, she’s going to say no and you’re going to get embarrassed. Just let it play out. You meet Ryan, Allison, Ace, and Grace in Latin but only you, Ace and Grace are the only three that finish all four years. I’m not going to tell you about the rest of the four years, I’ll leave you to live that by surprise. You need a little surprises for high school, I can’t tell you everything. Oh and if you’re thinking about getting a boyfriend, don’t bother. The guys at LWC aren't shit. Neither are the guys in college. Or on any dating app. But let me give you the rundown ten years later. Pretend I’m a psychic. It’s 2021, you’re 23, living at home, becoming a writer and you have your own blog. You graduate college with a degree in Communication and join a sorority, so you better kick your internalized misogyny brain to the curb. You don’t need that toxic waste in your system. I’m not going to tell you what college you go to, but you’ll like it. Trust me. When I get in, don't let mom convince us to get a single, trust me with how shy we are you’ll never make friends in the first week. When you get your bid into the sorority, don’t be so shy. They’re going to be some of your best friends for the next four years, you might as well get to know them. There’s going to be drama, but do you expect anything else. The work is going to be harder, but more rewarding. You’ll meet better people in your major than most of the kids in high school (other than the few you left with). You get to go on an amazing trip one summer and get to see beautiful parts of Europe, but I’m not telling you where you get to go. Just make sure your stuff is safe and don’t bring a backpack. Unless you WANT to get mugged on your first day. In 2020, you live through a global pandemic. Shuts everything down. It was supposed to be for 2 weeks, but people don’t listen and America turns out to have the most cases. Don’t worry, everyone’s fine. We struggle. We struggle finding a job, becoming a full time blogger, maintaining your mental health for the first few months of 2020. We plaster a smile on our face and we pretend that everything is okay. We’ll be okay though, it just takes some time. Also, avoid Frank as much as possible during quarantine. I know we suck at taking advice, but I’m going to give you some anyways: Start writing. Now. More than ever. Don’t let anyone stop us. Don’t get stuck in our mind. It’s a terrible place to be in. Stop worrying about things, you act like the world is going to collapse or something. Please keep up rollerblading. We used to love it, but now they’re collecting dust next to dad’s desk. We did take dad’s desk, the white one so gross. Move your bed to the window, trust me. You’ll have so much more room for walking around at 2:00 AM. Stop caring what other people think, especially other family members. They’re opinions don’t matter. Stop over thinking everything, it’s not worth the stress. You need to stop trusting everything you see and stop trusting every person you meet. You’re gonna get hurt that way. Dating apps are trash, but when you live in the burbs or go to school in the middle of nowhere it comes in handy. Stop being so picky but don’t let your standards slip. You have standards for a reason. Stay focused. Don’t let others distract you. Love, Your Future Self.
